On Track
A Counseling Program for Children and their Families
Children show emotional distress by getting “off track.” A change in a child’s behavior may indicate distress, such as a lively child becoming quieter, a child who does well in school getting a poor report card or an increase in a child’s negative attention getting behavior. What a parent might see are some of the following:
Poor school performance Clinginess Fearfulness Aches and pains with no medical cause Ongoing defiance Outbursts of anger or aggressiveness Stealing and/or lying Sleeping and/or eating problems Sadness Frequent complaints about a lack of friends Constant negative comments about oneself and/or others
A child’s distress is caused by internal and external factors. A good example of how internal factors affect children is puberty. A thirteen year old behaves very differently than a ten year old because of changes going on inside them. External factors affect children as well. Changes in the family, at school and with friends can cause distress within a child that shows up in changed behavior. Children don’t always know how to tell us something is wrong, they show us with their behavior. Some children seem to have struggled from the very beginning and the challenges just get harder with each year.
The On Track Counseling Program for Children and their Families offers a comfortable atmosphere with experienced, caring counselors who provide; 1. Evaluation, 2) Education, 3) Counseling and 4) Parent Coaching to get children and families back on track.
