Building a Bridge
A Counseling Program for Pre-Marital and Marital Couples
We bring many things to our marital relationship beside our love for our mate. We bring expectations of what life together will be like. We bring our personal history and past experiences with others. We bring our personality with its strengths and limitations. We also have different ways of looking at situations and dealing with daily events. We have different ways of feeling and expressing love.
Researchers, who have studied couples over the last thirty years, have identified two factors that determine whether a couple will stay together or separate; 1. How they handle their differences, and 2. If they take time to enjoy each other on a regular basis (nurture their relationship).
Every day a couple deals with differences, from small ones like what to do on the weekend to big ones, like how to handle the finances. These daily differences, along with the many differences we bring to the relationship already, can cause major problems if a couple doesn’t have a successful way of dealing with them. They can get caught up in an endless battle of “I’m right/you’re wrong,” or grow more distant as they avoid any meaningful discussion for fear it will end up in a fight. This situation becomes even more difficult if the couple is facing extraordinary issues, such as personal, professional or family problems.
The Building a Bridge Counseling Program for Pre-marital and Marital Couples is for couples who want to be more effective at handling their differences. When there is mutual understanding, respectful and open communication, and an environment that feels emotionally safe for husband and wife, a couple is able to manage daily issues and life’s ups and downs successfully. Being able to handle issues together strengthens the bond of love, improves intimacy, and makes everyone in the family happier.
